SG Board asks for larger police facility expansion

            Plans to move forward with a police facility expansion were delayed on Tuesday when the Sugar Grove Village Board asked for a plan with additional space.


Maple Park changes police on-call fees

Board also discusses possible need for police referendum in 2009

            The Maple Park Village Board on Tuesday approved a policy that would pay police officers a flat fee of $25 for one eight-hour shift within one 24-hour period, to be available to take calls when they are not on-duty. Officers would receive their regular rate of $16.50 per hour if they receive and respond to a call.


Party Animals moving, adding coffee shop

Children's celebration, gift store finds larger space downtown

            Downtown Elburn has been an ideal location for Party Animals, with the business growing so much that it requires more space, owner Cindy Thul said. So she decided to relocate the store from 108 N. Main St. to a larger site in the same block.

            Thul, of Elburn, plans to move Party Animals this fall to the former Gliddon Drug’s location, 116 N. Main St. The store hosts kids' theme parties and sells children's gifts.

            Thul is renovating the first floor for her store, which will have a commercial kitchen for candy-making and cookie parties. She also will open a coffee shop onsite.


Sportsmen's Club wins national award

            For promoting shotgun sports and community involvement, St. Charles Sportsmen's Club in Elburn recently was named Gun Club of the Year by the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA).

            “It's a big deal for us,” Sportsmen's Club president Bob Schor said.

Tears, balloons mark bittersweet event

            Tears fell amid raindrops on Aug. 28 at the Maple Park fire station as a crowd of about 40 gathered to remember Maple Park resident Bradley Olsen, missing since Jan 2007. Friends and family came out to pay tribute to Olsen and others in Illinois whose cases are yet unsolved.

            “Les Misérables,” a huge hit in France as a novel by Victor Hugo in 1862, was equally popular as a Broadway musical between 1987 and 2003.



Reading groups offer an escape

            Twelve years after she began the book club with Town and Country Public Library in Elburn, then situated in a storefront on Main Street, Margaret Ritchie is one of the only original surviving members. And although she misses the women who first joined but have since passed away, she said the women who belong currently have become her good friends.
