The Sugar Grove Corn Boil organization uses part of the proceeds from its annual summer festival to benefit several local organizations that help the community.
On Oct. 21, the Corn Boil 2011 Planning Committee recognized many of those organizations. This year, it distributed nearly $10,000 from the festival among the following groups: Between Friends Food Pantry; Kane Co. Sheriff; Kaneland Cheerleaders; Big Rock Park District; Kaneland John Shields School; Clown Ministry; Sugar Grove United Methodist Church; Sugar Grove Community House; Sugar Grove Historical Society; Calvary West; Sugar Grove Park District; Elburn Scout Troop No. 7; Village Bible Church; Sugar Grove American Legion Post No. 1217; Sugar Grove Senior Center; West Towns; and St. Katharine–Drexel Catholic Church.
Additionally, the committee recognized the Jim Wilhem Family for their outstanding contribution to the Corn Boil and will place a bench in their honor on public property in Sugar Grove.
Corn Boil also has enabled other community groups to benefit through participation in the festival. The Sugar Grove Fire Fighters Association has sold beer at Corn Boil for years, using the funds it raises for community fire safety awareness programs; burn victim summer camps; and Fire Department equipment.
The Sugar Grove Library Friends hold their annual Used Book Sale in the multi-purpose room of Kaneland John Shields Elementary school. The sales enable Friends to focus public attention on library services, facilities and needs; support development of library services, education programs and facilities; and provide funds for the purchase of materials and equipment.
The Sugar Grove Park District sponsors the Corn Boil 5-K. This is a 3.1 mile (USATF certified #IL-04086-JW) course on residential streets. Park District programming benefits from the proceeds of this event.
The wildly popular Bingo tent is located near the school gymnasium. The Bingo tent has several host organizations: Kaneland McDole PTO; Kaneland (KMS-KHS) Music Boosters; Kaneland Harter Middle School PTO; and Kaneland Peer Leadership Group.
The Sugar Grove Lions Club has long been the sponsor of the fireworks for the annual Corn Boil. The Lions are known for their programs to test and give assistance for people with vision difficulties.
