Senior Jay Levita’s impressive 2008-2009 wrestling campaign came to an end on Friday in Champaign after his first match, but it made the season no less impressive.

Levita’s lone match was a 9-3 loss to Springfield’s Dane Atwood in the 145-pound grouping.

Washington freshman Dylan Reel was crowned state champ after beating Fenton’s Josh Castellano in the final.

In only three years, still somewhat raw in wrestling terms, Levita’s time, effort and talent paid off, according to head coach Monty Jahns.

“When you have an athlete, such as Jay, who is willing to put forth the effort, then goals can be attained. I would take a full team of inexperience if they would all had the same work ethic as Jay did this year,” Jahns said.

Levita ended with 31 wins.
