This is getting to be familiar territory for Kaneland’s Grant Alef.

That territory is the water.

Alef, the lone KHS representative for the second year in a row, qualified once again for the IHSA State Swim Meet at New Trier this weekend. Alef’s performance came at the St. Charles East Sectional.

The sophomore finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.14.

Alef, with John Shields principal Shelley Hueber as a district sponsor, also swam the 100-yard backstroke in 53.39 seconds, good for third place. Last year saw Alef hit 4:52.04 in the freestyle and 54.94 in the backstroke.

“I’m tapering right now, so that’ll hopefully allow me to have my peak performance,” Alef said. “I feel like I’m going pretty good in both events, and I’ve been in this situation before. My goal was to get here.”

Alef also swims with the Kishwaukee YMCA/DeKalb County swim team.
