Wrestling starts on mat in Freeport

KANELAND—With a full lineup after the end of football season, it was time to hit the mat for Kaneland wrestling on Saturday morning.

At Freeport High School, Kaneland emerged with a win over the host Pretzels and a 43-22 loss against Kendall County rival Oswego.

In the 51-21 dual win over Freeport, Chris Sabal earned a pin in three minutes, 59 seconds over Tevin Person in the 145-pound clash.

152-pound entry Jordan Wolf earned a 7-2 decision, while 215-pound teammate Ben Kovalick took home a 4-1 decision.

Stalwart Jimmy Boyle won a technical fall, 17-2, over Kendall Parker in the heavyweight tussle.

112-pounder Connor Williams earned a 3:16 pin over Ryan Angell, while Ryan Goodenough took a 5:20 pin in the 119-pound matchup.

In other victories, 125-pounder Tyler Esposito won a 15-1 major decision, and 140-pounder Andrew Essex won by pin over Wade Dodson in 5:47.

Against the Panthers, wins were harder to come by, but 189-pound rep Keagan Mattes took a 62-second pinfall over Jack Smith, and Kovalick added to the mix with a 4-0 decision. Boyle won a 5-0 decision, and the 130-pound clash went to Dan Goress, who took a 14-3 major decision on the final matchup.

On the horizon for Kaneland wrestling is the first Northern Illinois Big XII meeting in school history, at Sycamore on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m., and a weekend meeting at Lemont High School that will also feature Thornton Fractional South on Saturday, Dec.4.
