Sugar Grove UMC to set controlled burn

By on March 18, 2009

The Sugar Grove United Methodist Church will organize a controlled burn of its three-acre prairie planted at the Harter Road campus, three quarters of a mile west of Route 47 and Waubonsee Community College.

The burn will take place Saturday, March 21, at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to surround the perimeter of the burn to properly manage it. Controlled burns are a common management technique to control the invasion of non-native plants and stimulate growth of native Illinois prairie grasses and flowers.

The prairie, which acts like a giant kidney to purify ground water before it seeps into nearby Blackberry Creek, has been planted over a six-year period by church members, local Boy and Girl Scouts and students from local schools.
