New course layout just one of the changes to August staple

ELBURN—It’s fitting that the new course for the 2011 version of the Elburn Days 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk begins and ends at Lions Park.
The hub of most everything Elburn Days will be the start and finish point for this year’s version of the competition. It’s just one of the modifications put forth by Lions Club Chairman of the 5K Mark Eddington.
“We did some homework and we’re making modifications that a lot of the area races have already done,” Eddington said on Wednesday. “We’ve wanted to do some of these things for a couple of years and are finally pulling the trigger.”
The first change was the course itself.
“We had done it at the fire department, and while designing a new course, you can’t do Route 47 and across the train tracks. Then you look at the four different quadrants of the town and we looked at Lions Park in the southwest quadrant. You can get more people to participate around there,” Eddington said.
The other changes set to impact the race in 2011 include the program of chip timing, which electronically records start and stop times for individual racers by a timing company.
“It takes the human error out of recording times, and makes the race more sophisticated,” Eddington said.
In addition to trophies, the Lions Club also has cash prizes in store for the first-, second- and third-place finishers in the men’s and women’s groups.
“We have cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 and it should make things more interesting,” Eddington said.
Online registration is also newly available for the 2011 gathering.
No stranger to long-distance running himself, Eddington offers helpful advice to fleet-footed participants.
“It’s going to be significantly flatter, so those that hate hills will probably enjoy it more. I’d make sure to stay well hydrated, as well,” he said.
