Local hair salon gets back to basics

SUGAR GROVE—People who are looking for haircuts that are high priced and come with a glass of champagne might be disappointed with what Sugar Grove’s Cutz & Stylz Hair Salon has to offer.
That’s because Cutz & Stylz owner Bobbie McMillan isn’t interested in running a salon built on overinflated prices and unnecessary amounts of glitz. She just wants to offer great haircuts at a reasonable price.
“I’ve been a hair stylist for 29 years, and I’m not a big fan of real expensive salons and all the hoopla puff,” she said. “Have a glass of champagne so I can charge you $50 more when you get your haircut—that sort of thing.”
McMillan said she believes most people just want good customer service at a reasonable price, and they typically don’t want to spend their entire day in a hair salon.
“They want to get in and get out. You don’t want a haircut so fast that they forgot things, but you want to get the haircut in a reasonable amount of time,” she said.
Cutz & Stylz, located at 44 Terry Drive in Sugar Grove, opened on July 1 and offers $13 haircuts for adults and $11 for children under the age of 10, senior citizens and members of the military. The salon also has daily specials such as 10 percent off perms on Mondays, $2 off haircuts on Tuesdays, $2 off waxing on Wednesdays, 10 percent off of color on Thursdays, and free shampooing for men on Fridays.
“We do haircuts, perms, waxing and color, and we have special (discount) days to help everyone out a little bit,” she said.
Even an expensive salon package at Cutz & Stylz, including a shampoo, haircut, color, highlight and blow-dry, is reasonably priced, and costs about $110.
“It can get costly, but it’s not as costly as other places. And I don’t mark my products up as much as other places,” McMillan said. “We’re not a cheap place, but if you get a little bit of a discount on everything, it adds up throughout the year.”
McMillan also said she is currently looking to add accomplished staff to the salon and build clientele.
McMillan has been a resident of Sugar Grove for 10 years and said she and her husband are interested in helping the community grow by working with school PTOs to do fundraisers and “get some money back into the schools.” McMillan has a child who is currently in the school system.
“I am also interested in doing stuff with the Sugar Grove Food Pantry for charity,” she said. “I live here (in Sugar Grove), and I want to give back to the community.”
Cutz & Stylz is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
