Yonkovich shoots to Sectional for KHS golf

KANELAND—Kaneland golf will have a sectional presence after all.

Despite a sixth-place finish in the IHSA Class 2A Regional at the Highlands of Elgin golf course, the Knights’ sophomore talent Matt Yonkovich emerged as an advancing individual and heads to the sectional hosted by Wheaton Academy out at Pheasant Run in St. Charles on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The top three teams to advance were Marmion Academy with a 314 score, Wheaton Academy at 315 and Burlington Central at 322.

Kaneland’s 338 was one stroke behind St. Francis.

“It’s a fair course, and if you play it smart, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t shoot low scores here. What was giving us some trouble today were the greens. They’re in good shape, but for one reason or another, we weren’t putting very well,” KHS coach Mark Meyer said.

Yonkovich, who got a large amount of time on the varsity courses in his first varsity year, shot an 80.

The top advancing individual was St. Edward High School’s Michael Holevas.

On Sept. 28, Kaneland finished fifth with a score of 328 at the Northern Illinois Big XII Conference meet in Yorkville. The host Foxes took the meet over second-place Streator.

Yonkovich and teammate Adam Grams took an 80 off the course.

Junior varsity member Tori Guyton, younger sister of current Illinois State University golfer Hayley Guyton, was scheduled for regional action in girls golf on Wednesday.

Updatde: Tori Guyton qualified for sectionals. See next week’s paper for more details.
