Robert H. “Bob” Locke, 80, of Aurora, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. He was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Appleton, Wis., the son of the late Floyd and Mable (Wickesberg) Locke.
Bob grew up and went to Appleton Senior High School and was a graduate of Gale Institute and Midwestern Broadcasting School in Chicago. In 1952, he joined the United States Army and was in the Signal Corps during the Korean War.
He started broadcasting news and sports in Escanaba, Mich. He then moved back to Aurora and worked for WMRO and WKKD, broadcasting high school sports. Bob was inducted into the Illinois Hall of Fame, News Media in 1995. He was also inducted into the East Aurora Sports Hall of Fame. With his love of sports, Bob held a passion for broadcasting high school sports and fast-pitch softball. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and had a genuine love for all sports.
Bob was elected Commissioner of Public Health and Safety for the city of Aurora and served from 1973-1977. He worked for many years at Home Savings and Loan in downtown Aurora until his retirement. Bob also served as president and trustee for 20 years at Fox Metro Water Reclamation District.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elsie Kissel of Aurora. They had five children, Joseph (Hallie) Locke of Rockford, James (Jill) Locke of Elburn, Lori Werner of Oswego, Lisa (Scott)Felker of Sandwich and the late Judith Ann Locke, in infancy. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Steven Locke, Adam (Jessica) Locke, Jimmy Locke, Ben Locke, Robbie Locke, Kyle Werner, Hannah Werner, Troy and Peter Medlin and Caleb and Jacob Felker, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 1233 Douglas Road, Montgomery, with Pastor Scott Guhl officiating. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove. Bob will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the church.
