Church moves forward with lot closure

ELBURN—The Community Congregational Church late Thursday announced that it will move forward with closing the parking lot in downtown Elburn as of Sunday, April 15.

The announcement said the decision was not easy.

“It is with a heavy heart that the Community Congregational Church must close our parking lot to public parking as of April 15th, 2012,” church moderator Sharon Lackey wrote in her email. “We know that the local businesses need this parking and that is why we have allowed its use by the public for as long as we possibly could.”

Lackey cited concerns with the church’s insurance coverage as the primary motivator for the church’s decision.

“Our insurance coverage for the lot is only valid as long as it is primarily used for church parking and only incidental public parking. Therefore, we cannot expose the church to the liability of violating the terms of our insurance coverage,” she wrote. “We had hoped that the village of Elburn would see the value of the parking lot to the viability of the downtown businesses and make an offer for the lot so that it can continue to be available for public parking. This has not occurred so the lot will be closed as planned on April 15th.”

    I am amazed that a simple license agreement could not be reached between the city and Church. If the city would agree to pay a small amount per month or at the least the cost of the INS coverage for the parking lot I am sure the church would have agreed. This is not good for the business or the residents of Elburn. If buying the lot is off the table then we should move on to plan B and try to lease it.

    Please consider plan D for plan A wasn’t appropriate for Elburn tax payers to flip to bill for local business ventures.Now plan B isn’t an option either for why should Elburn tax payer’s flip the bill for personal ventures established without considering the parking for local liquor establishments,etc. Those(we should move on to plan B and try to lease it)should either buy it yourself and lease it out to the other business ,but I’m sure that won’t work financially for you so why not get your hand out of the till.
    Now comes to plan D Work with the city to beautify the First st.city owned parking lot that is 50% larger than the church lot and would make our whole heart of Elburn a nicer place for ALL residents of Elburn.Then too its about on the edge of the new rout for out forest preserve that was recently finished Maybe Kane county would help out with a grant to make First Street lot up to safety standards for public use. Seems that work has already started on the First Street lot.Lets not leave it decay.

    Not sure I understand that last post. Anyway maybe a nice new business out there buys the lot and puts their name on it. “Parking provided by ______”. (Dunkin Donuts, Panera Bread, Noodles and Company, Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, Burger King, Wendys etc…)
