State Sen. Chris Lauzen (R-25, Aurora) is accepting applications for the Illinois General Assembly Public Affairs Scholarship. This program allows each member of the Illinois General Assembly to award scholarships to current or prospective college students.
Eight one-year scholarships to any state university, including any campus of the University of Illinois, will be awarded. Graduate students are also welcome to apply.
“Although I would vote to discontinue the scholarship program because it represents a ‘perk’ of public office, I’m proud that our committee awards these competitive scholarships on merit and not politics,” Lauzen said. “We keep the process open and available to every student who meets the criteria.”
(1) Legal residence in the 25th Senate District (includes western part of Kane County, most of Kendall County and far southeastern LaSalle County)
(2) Acceptance at the university as a full-time student
(3) Evidence of activity in public and civic affairs
(4) Relative financial need
Each student must complete an application form, as well as furnish official school transcripts and three letters of recommendation. All materials must be submitted to Senator Lauzen’s office, postmarked no later than March 20, 2009. Those selected to receive the scholarships will be notified by mail in mid-May. For more information or to request an application, go to www.lauzen.com or contact Senator Lauzen’s Aurora office at (630) 264-2334. Application forms are also being sent to the Guidance Departments of all area high schools.
