George E. “Ernie” Telfer, 73, of Big Rock, passed away on Friday Aug. 15, 2014. He was born May 8, 1941, in Vincennes, Ind., the son of the late Ernest and Catherine (Cunningham) Telfer.
Ernie was raised in Vincennes. He served in the U.S. Navy. Ernie spent his entire career in the paper mill industry in Michigan and Illinois—where he worked for Aurora Paperboard, which became the Davey Company—up until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Church in Sugar Grove and was a greeter. Ernie was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Sandy of Big Rock; two children, Adam Telfer of Sandwich and Julie Telfer of St. Charles; two step-children, Stephanie (Mike) Gary of Houston, Texas, and Sarah (Nathan) Lambes of Hinckley; a granddaughter, Averie Telfer; two step-granddaughters, Claire and Vivian Lambes; his brother, Frank Telfer of Burbank, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Geneva Browne of Plano, Texas; his nephew, Robert Telfer of California; as well as other nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove. A liturgical wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 8S055 Dugan Road. Fr. Bob Jones will officiate. A prayer service will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the Mass, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Westside Cemetery, Geneva.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. Katherine Drexel Church for a special purpose.
