Letter: Please return money lost at Elburn Jewel

On the night of Aug. 4, a blue bank bag was left at the Jewel-Osco in Elburn. In it was cash totaling $3,400, as well as check books for personal and business accounts.

Why so much cash?

My dog, Jak, was diagnosed with lymphoma in June, and the money was for his treatment. He is a lively 7-year-old mixed breed with a heart of gold; and his medical expenses are racking up.

I thought a little town like Elburn still had very honest and proud residents, but I was very wrong and hurt by this little town. I know times are tough right now for everyone, but to steal money?

Please return the cash and contents without prosecution, to any bank in Elburn.

    THE PEOPLE IN ELBURN FOR THE MOST PART ARE GOOD, DON’T BLAME US FOR YOUR IRRESPONSABILITY.
    THERE ARE BAD PEOPLE EVERYWHERE EVEN IN CAMPTON HILLS, MOST OF THEM DRIVE LIKE IDIOTS WITH CELL PHONES LOCKED TO THEIR EARS WHILE TURNING ONTO 47 OFF MCDONALDS RD, REAL SMART MOVE, THEY CAN DO THIS WITHOUT LOOKING INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC BECAUSE THE WORLD SHOULD COME TO A STOP FOR THEM.
    THAT’S THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THIS WORLDS PEOPLE OF TODAY, THEY BLAME EVERYONE ELSE FOR THEIR PROBLEMS AND BEING CARELESS.
    THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE TO BLAME IS YOUR SELF.
    THOSE OF OF THAT HAVE LIVED HERE FOR SOME TIME ARE PROUD OF THIS VILLAGE AND TAKE THINGS TO HEART WE ARE HONEST AS WELL.
    THE ONLY THING I FEEL BAD ABOUT IS THE DOG BEING SICK.
    AND PLEASE SHOP IN ST. CHARLES FROM NOW ON, AND KEEP OUT OF MY BAD LITTLE TOWN. WE ARE JUST FINE WITHOUT YOU!

    I also am sorry to hear about your dog and your loss of money. However, I think it is completely unfair for you to speak bad about the town and residents of Elburn. How do you know the culprit was a resident of Elburn? After all, you were at the Jewel and you are apparently from Campton Hills. The culprit could be from anywhere.

    GIJOE, there’s no need to go off on a rant about Campton Hills. It just makes you sound defensive and agitated. You don’t need to take the words in this letter so personally, absolutely nothing in it is unreasonable or offensive. Obviously these people are going through a difficult time, so why not show them a little understanding instead?

    I HAVE LIVED HERE IN ELBURN OVER 30 YEARS AND TAKE IT TO HEART WHEN SHE PRETTY MUCH CALLED US A TOWN OF THIEVES.
    ALL THE PEOPLE I KNOW IN THIS TOWN FOR THE MOST PART ARE GOOD PEOPLE.
    AS FOR THE NEW COMERS, DON’T KNOW THEM, CAN’T JUDGE THEM.
    THE JEWEL EMPLOYEES PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE PLACE, WHO KNOWS WHO TOOK THE MONEY, COULD HAVE BEEN SOMEONE FROM CAMPTON TWSP?
    AS FOR CAPS, THAT’S HOW I WRITE WHEN UPSET TO GET A POINT ACROSS.
    AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THE MONEY UNATTENDED?
    IRRESPONSIBLE? I GUESS SO !
    I do feel bad for the dog, I love animals, to bad they lost the money.
    When times are as bad as they are for allot of people, there will be those who steal money and such to make ends meet.
    They will do things they normally would not do.
    So the lesson is to watch things you value, keep things secured.
    Should have learned that from their parents.

    When people make mistakes, it’s always easy to look back and see what they “should” have done instead. Nobody’s perfect. I’m sure it’s occurred to them that they should have kept better track or a better eye on their money. Doesn’t really seem worth lecturing them about, especially when it’s a mistake that didn’t harm or even inconvenience anyone else. No victims here but the couple who lost the money, after all.

    I don’t see why it’s unreasonable to believe that the bag was taken by someone in Elburn. If you were robbed in Chicago, wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that the robbers were from Chicago as well? It shouldn’t be any different for Aurora, St. Charles, Sugar Grove, or even Elburn. But making this assumption in this case isn’t the same as calling Elburn “a town of thieves.”

    Just not worth getting worked up over, IMHO.
