Elizabeth “Betty†J. Hartmann, 79, of Elburn, passed away suddenly following a heart complication at Delnor Hospital, Geneva, on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009.
She was born Dec. 10, 1929, the daughter of Archie and Margaret (McKinley) Schutzman.
Betty was born in Chicago and attended local schools, graduating from Harrison High School in 1947.
Betty was working at Woolworths Store in Chicago and found more than she bargained for when she met Charles M. Hartmann. They were united in marriage on May 22, 1948, at Resurrection Church in Chicago. They began their new life together in Chicago right off of Cicero Avenue in an apartment once owned by Al Capone.
In the mid 1950s, the now growing family moved to Bellwood, Ill., and then to Lombard, Ill., in 1973 and Villa Park, Ill., in 1976. Charlie and Betty moved to Geneva in 1986, but when Charlie passed away shortly afterwards on Aug. 2, 1989, Betty moved to Carol Stream, Ill. Then in 1999, Betty moved to Elburn to be near her son.
Betty worked at Turnstyle, once owned by Jewel. Venture soon bought them out, but Betty stayed for the next 25 years.
She was a faithful member of St. Gall Catholic Church, Elburn, and former member of the Corpus Christi Church in Carol Stream.
Betty was a member of the “Shop Till You Drop Club.†She always had an eye for a bargain, which allowed her to “spend a little†but “shop a-lot.†She also enjoyed spending time with her friends exercising at the Elburn Countryside Community Center. Above all, she loved her family and was happiest when they were together.
She now leaves two sons, Ed (Donna) Hartmann of Pecatonica, Ill., and Art (Linda) Hartmann of Elburn; five grandchildren, Bryan (Traci) Hartmann and their children, Brendan, Nicholas and Zachary of Dixon, Ill., Kristy (Brad) Huffman and their children, Ashlyn, Meghan and Ryan of Dixon, Ill., Dennis (Jennifer) Hartmann and their children, Tyler and Kyle of Cortland, Jerry (Patty) Huston of South Elgin, Ill., Jennifer Huston and her son, William of Eagle, Neb.; one brother-in-law, John LeVoy of Eagle River, Wis.; one sister-in-law, Vivian Schutzman of McHenry, Ill.; one nephew, John LeVoy of Florida; several nieces, nephews and a family of friends.
She now joins her parents; sister, Margaret LeVoy; and two brothers, Carl and Arthur Schutzman, who preceded her in death.
Visitation was Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A mass to celebrate her life was held Wednesday, with a time of visitation preceding the service at St. Gall Catholic Church. Fr. Karl Ganss, pastor of the church, officiated, and interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial to benefit her favorite charities has been established in her name. Checks may be made to the “Betty Hartmann Memorial†and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119. Personal tributes and memories may also to the same address or forwarded to the family through www.conleycare.com.
