Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â LeRoy E. Challand, 76, of DeKalb, died on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, in the DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in DeKalb. Born on Aug. 14, 1932, on the family farm in Shabbona, Ill., he was the son of Earl L. and Ruth (Matteson) Challand.
Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â LeRoy was married to the former Shirley Burnell on Sept. 10, 1955, in the St. Gall Catholic Church in Elburn. LeRoy worked for the city of St. Charles in the Street and Sewer Department as an Equipment Operator for 24.5 years. LeRoy lived in the DeKalb community for three years, moving there from Fairdale, Ill.
Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. LeRoy is a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, and a former member of the St. Charles Moose. He loved his garage and loved working on cars, tractors, lawn mowers and especially playing with his grandchildren. He was known by his family as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Survivors include his wife, Shirley of DeKalb, daughters, Katherine Funkhouser of DeKalb, and Linda (David) Turk of Elburn; son, David (Mattie) Challand of Mendota, Ill.; grandchildren, Stephanie (Aaron) Bloyd of Sycamore, Clinton Walker of Elburn, Benjamin Turk of Elburn, and Grace Turk of Elburn; great-granddaughter, Emma Bloyd of Sycamore; sister, Mary (Al) McKenzie of Aurora, Colo.; and brother, Roger (Betty) Challand of Rockford, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Doris Smith, and June Jones.
Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Funeral Mass was held Oct. 23, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, with the Rev. Father Kenneth Anderson officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery on Oct. 23in Shabbona, Ill. Visitation was Oct. 22, with a wake service at in the funeral home. Visitation was also held in the church on Oct. 23 until the time of the service.
