Short term impact of reopening contract - 1. Money savings for the school district. 2. Some teaching positions may be preserved. 3. More credibility for KEA 4. Short-term fix for the district that benefits students for the next 1-2 years.

Long term impact - 1. Doesn't solve chronic funding problems due to failure of the state to return tax dollars to the district. 2. Sets a bad precedent where no contract may be honored in the future. 3. Financial setback for teachers. 4. Less respect for the KEA by taxpayers making future referendums more likely to fail.

After the board makes the difficult decisions for the $2.6mil cuts (including cutting teachers) there will be another cut following a decision by the state which will most likely reduce funding by another $1mil NEXT YEAR! I continue to struggle with KEA decision not to even discuss options to help. Their public statement "The end result is a decision that says the long-term negative impact of restructuring this salary schedule outweighs the short-term benefit of alleviating the struggle of balancing next year’s budget.", is vague. Teach us about the lt v st impact.
