He is the grandson of Theodore and Lauryce Weydert of Maple Park, and the son of Martha Weydert-Cohen, a 1982 Kaneland High School graduate.

Local graduates include Benjamin Cork of Elburn, and Nathan Fabrizius and Brock Foster, both of Maple Park.

Millikin named Rebecca Hof of Elburn to its high dean’s list; and named Michelle Buck and Erika Davidson, both of Elburn, to its dean’s list.

Chad Papke of Elburn was among those who graduated from the University of Northern Iowa following the spring semester. Kristina Srog of Elburn was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester.

Steven Campbell of Maple Park, and Jessica Foody, Jennifer Howard and Ashley Urra, all of Sugar Grove, were named to the list.

Each retiree received a memento. Retirees contributed a combined total of 263 years of service to the university.

Stan Pistorius served as a university grounds worker from 1980 to 1985 and as grounds manager from 1986 to 2010. During his first five years, he served under his father, George, who was grounds manager from 1963 to 1986. Together, their service totaled 53 years. Pistorius plowed snow, mowed, edged, mulched, raked, trimmed trees and bushes, and performed other grounds-maintenance activities. Additionally, he maintained university vehicles and equipment, including mowers, snow removal equipment and tractors.

Joseph Burroughs of Elburn received Cum Laude rankings at level 4 in Latin. In the National Latin Exam Competition, Burroughs and Colin Sikic of Sugar Grove earned a silver medal and a Maxima Cum Laude certificate. Benjamin Pho of Maple Park earned a Magna Cum Laude certificate. Zachary Locjmueller of Elburn earned a level one Cum Laude certificate.

The National Latin Exam was taken by more than 135,000 students from all 50 states and 11 foreign countries including Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, England, Italy, Mozambique, New Zealand, Poland, and for the first time, Israel and Lithuania.

Reid Weigelmann of Sugar Grove earned a silver medal in the National Spanish exam, while Anthony Perez and Stuart Quinn of Sugar Grove earned bronze.

The award is given to a senior teaching assistant who has shown excellence in teaching while being a consistent leader for the other student teaching assistants.

This semester’s works included art from Erin Cinto of Sugar Grove.

Undergraduate students are eligible for the deans’ list when they complete at least 12 hours in the semester with a minimum of a 3.33 grade point average.

Local students include Lauren Contorno and Anna Rossi of Elburn; and John Konovodoff and Madison Schaefer, both of Sugar Grove.

To be on the dean’s list, a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better during the semester, based on 4.0 for straight A’s.

Caitlyn M. Buchanan of Elburn, and Sugar Grove’s Danielle P. Meyer and Ashley E. Schultz were among the 1,175 named to the list.

Students who achieve a GPA of 3.8 to 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale) while completing a minimum of 12 graded semester hours, excluding credit/no credit grades will be named to the deans’ list.

The purpose of the Community Foundation Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance to students who are academically qualified to pursue an advanced education in their chosen field of study. Scholarships are established within the Community Foundation by individuals, businesses, non-profit organizations, civic clubs and through bequests.

Local residents receiving degrees included Tara Czepiel of Sugar Grove, who majored in biology and Spanish, and Benjamin Janis of Elburn, who majored in computer science.

Sofia Zafar of Sugar Grove was inducted into the Pleiades chapter of the Mortor Board Senior Honor Socitiety, one of the most distinguished honor societies in higher education. Induction into the Mortor Board signifies high achievement in scholarship, leadership and service to the community.

Undergraduates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher out of 4.0 to be named to the list.

Earning bachelor’s degrees were Heather Pierson and Bryant Storm, of Elburn; Samantha Perr of Maple Park; and Amber Fessler, Colette Kuk, Natalie Rowe and Kelsey Ryan, all of Sugar Grove.

Steven Campbell of Maple Park graduated summa cum laude with a degree in radio and television journalism, Jessica Foody of Sugar Grove graduated cum laude with a degree in nursing, and Jennifer Howard of Sugar Grove graduated with a degree in nursing.

Local students include John Brennan and Sarah Goodrich, both of Maple Park, and Adam Engelskirchen and Dana Zimmer, both of Sugar Grove.

To receive this award, an undergraduate student must earn at least a 3.6 grade point average on a scale of 4.0.

Nelson is a 2005 graduate of Kaneland High School and is the son of Steve and Laura Nelson.

The convocation recognized students and faculty for academic achievements and campus contributions. AU President Rebecca L. Sherrick presided at the event.

A graduate of St. Charles North High School, Price is the son of Cathy Ling and Paul Price.

Andrew Manion, AU provost, presented Price’s award. It recognizes a student’s scholarship and service to AU and the Aurora community. Faculty choose a senior for the honor based on outstanding contribution to university life during his/her university career.

To be nominated, a student must live the core values of AU—integrity, citizenship, continuous learning and excellence—attain a GPA of 3.5 or better and exhibit exemplary character.

“This student has been well known by the faculty throughout his time at Aurora University,” Manion said. “We feel this individual embodies the qualities necessary to deserve this award. He is a gifted and dedicated student and has a genuine intellectual curiosity. He demonstrates a passion for learning both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Price was selected for the Dunham Scholar Program, Delta Mu Delta Honorary Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society for freshmen.

He has been a member of the football team for four years, served as captain of the tennis team for three years and was MVP for two years. He was named an NCAA Scholar Athlete, served on AU Sports Leadership Council, and was selected to represent AU at the NCAA Division III Leadership Conference.

Additionally, he was a peer advisor for three years, served as Pre-Law Club president and started a Phi Alpha Delta chapter at AU. His service projects include Angel Tree, a fundraiser for children whose parents are incarcerated; participated in the Wayside Cross Walk a Mile, a fundraiser for Wayside Cross Ministries; he co-led the Dunham Scholars, cooking brunch for Ronald McDonald House Charity; served as a tutor during his junior year at Herget Middle School; supported a benefit for Friends of the Park; and served as a Novak Park community volunteer, helping with landscaping, rebuilding docks and renovating the community pavilion.

Buck, a theatre major presented a research project titled, “Singing and the Tao Te Ching: A Return to the Natural Way”.

The projects presented represent the culmination of at least two years of research. Most of the topics were conceived by the students and then refined with the help of a faculty project advisor.

The students in the James Millikin Scholars program are some of the best students at Millikin University. The students have maintained high academic standards while being some of the most actively involved students on campus. They were chosen for the program at the end of their sophomore year at Millikin.

To be eligible for the Dean’s List, undergraduate students must maintain a grade-point average of 3.6 for the term and be enrolled as full-time students. Part-time students are recognized at the end of each academic year if they meet the same criterion and have completed at least eight credit hours, the equivalent of one term as a full-time student.

Korth is the daughter of Dan and Mary Korth of Elburn.

Buck received the Mary B. Merris Award; it is presented to outstanding voice students on the basis of excellence and achievement. Davidson received the the Michelle Chartier Memorial Award. This award is presented to a student active in the Department of Theatre and Dance with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5.

Czepiel is a senior at Augustana and is majoring in biology and Spanish.

Only about one in every 100 college students nationwide is selected as a member of the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the nation.

Augustana students are selected for Phi Beta Kappa based on their academic standing and recommendations from faculty members. Members must be senior students who exhibit strong intellect and integrity and are committed to freedom of thought and expression. Augustana emphasizes that election to Phi Beta Kappa is more than an honor of past academic success. It is also recognition of a student’s outstanding potential for growth and achievement.

To achieve the distinction, Neumann had to earn at least 30 credits and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

In honor of these students’ dedication and commitment to academic excellence, Kishwaukee College announced its Part-time Student Honors List for fall 2009.

Included on that list is Christina Witkowski of Maple Park.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must have completed a minimum of six, but less than 12, semester hours of college-level courses at Kishwaukee with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

To qualify for the dean’s list in Arts & Sciences, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

The 17 seniors and 16 juniors are considered top leaders within the classroom and extracurricular achievements, a privilege afforded to just 3 percent of the total population of students at Augustana.

Omicron Delta Kappa recognizes and promotes accomplishments in the areas of academics, athletics, service, social and religious activities, campus government, journalism, speech, mass media, and creative and performing arts.

Elburn resident Michelle Buck is part of the chorale. She is a senior majoring in theater.

Elburn resident Andrew Drendel received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education—K-12. Sugar Grove resident Jeffery Morrical received a Bachelor of Business—Accountancy degree. Maple Park resident Lee Schramer received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural science.

During the nine weeks of basic combat training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area.

Tosaw is the son of John Tosaw of Sugar Grove. The private is a 2009 graduate of Kaneland High School.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Douglas J. and Venesa Lewis of Maple Park.

Lewis is a 2009 graduate of Kaneland High School, Maple Park.

To qualify for the dean’s list at Ripon College, students must achieve a 3.40 grade point average or higher on a 4.00 scale and complete at least 12 credits of regular letter-graded work.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must achieve a minimum 3.5 gradepoint average for the semester on a 4.0 scale.

The University Choir is one of five primary choral ensembles involving over 300 students. Choir members are chosen after highly competitive auditions among the student body and represent a variety of majors.

The choir has an extensive touring history, including performances in Scandinavia, Russia, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, England, China and Taiwan. The choir started its annual winter tour on Jan. 7, with performances in Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Indiana and Missouri.

During the eight-week program, Seger completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is Battle Stations. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘Navy’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Seger is a 2008 graduate of Cedar Falls High School of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Flanagan graduated in 1996 from Kaneland High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 2002 from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

Local Marmion students named as Illinois State Scholars were Joseph Burroughs of Elburn, and Thomas Cruger, Kevin Filip, Andrew Oesterlin, Michael Roth and Casey White, all of Sugar Grove.

The UW-Whitewater Concert Choir is a large mixed chorus made up of singers from across campus. Repertoire includes classical music of all periods, both sacred and secular, as well as global music. Performances are at university and local events, including concerts in combination with other choirs and the Whitewater Symphony Orchestra.

Less than one in 154 FFA members advance through their local chapter and state FFA degree programs to earn this national degree. Carson, the daughter of Dan and Anne Carson of Maple Park, is currently pursuing a degree in Agricultural Education at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

She is a member of the Kaneland FFA Chapter, and her agricultural education instructor and FFA advisor is Laura Widhalm.

Employees were recognized at a third annual Fall Founders Convocation in Crimi Auditorium. Local employees recognized were Beverly Taylor of Elburn and Judith Maxwell, both with five years of service.

To receive the honor, Roth placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students participating.

The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. College students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation to serve in the Army or ROTC, and are eligible to receive two-year college scholarship offers and attend the Advanced ROTC Course at their college.

Cadets are observed and evaluated during classroom and field training exercises to determine their officer potential in leadership abilities and skills. The cadets are trained to have a sound understanding of traditional leadership values during the challenging, motivating “hands-on” training. The training develops well-disciplined, highly motivated, physically conditioned students, and helps improve the cadets’ self-confidence, initiative, leadership potential, decision making, and collective team cohesion. The cadets receive training in fundamental military skills, Army values, ethics, warrior ethos, basic rifle marksmanship, small arms tactics, weapons training, drill and ceremony, communications, combat water survival training, rappelling, land navigation, and squad-level operations field training.

The cadet is a student at Utah State University. She is the daughter of Harvey L. and Donna D. Williams of Chippewa Trail, Sugar Grove.

During their terms of office, student senate members gain leadership and interpersonal skills, learn to work with budgets and experience how to organize campus events. Members of the student senate are responsible for administering student government policies and activities at the Sugar Grove, Aurora and Copley campuses. They are elected by the student body to serve a term of one academic year.

A staff nurse since 1983, she has been employed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and at Delnor-Community Hospital, where she has provided care for patients with a variety of critical medical surgical needs. She received her M.S.N. in Nursing Education from Lewis University in May.

In addition, Hartmann also earned the David Distinguished Scholars Award and the George Beadle Scholarship.

Her awards were based on her accomplishments while a student at the university’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Among those accomplishments are her involvement in the Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honor Society, Pi Eta Sigma honor society, Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, member of the AgEcon Club, member of Block and Bridle, member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

“My career goals include employment in the Ag-Econ industry, supporting our family farm through business and marketing decisions, and leadership in our local agriculture groups,” Hartmann said. “Keeping a well-balanced goal will allow me to strive to leadership roles in the agriculture industry.”

Hartmann is the daughter of Doug and Cathy Hartmann.

The Communication and Journalism Department at the University of St. Thomas launched TommieMedia.com in an effort to reflect the realities of today’s journalism and media.

As the assignment editor, Kenkel oversees and produces multimedia story content.

Among those recognized were Headquarters Company First Sgt. Joseph Burroughs of Elburn, Bravo Company 2nd Platoon Leader Kevin Filip of Sugar Grove, and Charlie Company Executive Officer Thomas Cruger of Sugar Grove.

Sponsored by AU’s College of Education, the conference was designed to teach students classroom-management skills, what it is like to be a teacher, and how to effectively lead FEA chapters at their home schools.

The Presidential Scholarship is Dominican University’s most prestigious scholarship. It is awarded to students who rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class with an ACT score of 28 or higher. Scholarship recipients will receive a $15,000 award that is renewable until the student earns a bachelor’s degree, to a maximum of three years after the initial year.

The following local residents were recognized for receiving undergraduate degrees: Danielle Kendrick and Maddie Lehman, both of Elburn, and Zachary Bambach, Raquel Debartolo, Erin Mathews and Christina Skudlarek, all of Sugar Grove.

The following local residents received graduate degrees: Merit Stloukal of Elburn, Cynthia Violett of Maple Park, and Kimberly Ortegel and Sonia Zafar, both of Sugar Grove.

Admission to the college—which is only one of 28 veterinary schools in the nation—is highly competitive. Criteria for acceptance includes grade point average, admission test scores, background and experience, and personal interviews. Schramer is one of 120 members entering the class of 2013.

Schramer graduated from Sycamore High School in 2006. She then attended Montana State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in animal science in 2009.

Local Marmion juniors selected for induction include: Joseph Burroughs of Elburn, Thomas Cruger of Sugar Grove, Kevin Filip of Sugar Grove and Casey White of Sugar Grove.

With induction, a member assumes certain obligations and must maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character. The chapter conducts a service project for the school or community, and sees to the development of an individual service project for each member. In addition, regular meetings of the chapter are held to conduct chapter business and communicate with members. All active NHS chapter members are expected to support these and other chapter activities. Members’ projects include a Battle of the Bands competition and “Adopt a Highway” project, which they share with the student council.

They are recipients of GROWMARK-sponsored scholarships aimed at promoting higher education in agriculture and business.

Heather Pierson, the daughter of Dale and Tina Pierson of Elburn, was one of the scholarship winners. Pierson is majoring in agribusiness at Illinois State University.

“GROWMARK invests more than $47,500 annually on scholarships. We’re investing today for a return tomorrow,” said Steve German, GROWMARK university relations and member employment manager. “There’s a need for agriculture businesses to support formal education to strengthen agriculture.”

GROWMARK has been supporting college students with scholarships since the early 1960s. Today, they are awarded to students majoring in agriculture or accounting at 15 universities and colleges.
