KANELAND—Kaneland High School dished out end of the year and spring speason sports awards last week.

GLEN ELLYN—In the last tune-up before the postseason begins, the Lady Knights track team participated in the final Western Sun Conference meeting at Glenbard South High School on Friday.

KANELAND—With a middle of the pack finish at Saturday’s annual Jill Holmes Invitational, Kaneland High School saw some nice individual finishes with room to improve this month.

For those who were looking for a bigger Kaneland High School presence at the upcoming IHSA Class 2A State finals, they’ll get their wish.

In late-April, Kaneland met with 11 other schools to draw up plans for a new 12-team conference that would kick off in the fall of 2010.

With the temperature finally rising in the area, Kaneland High School girls track seems to be taking that as a cue.

This past Saturday, Geneva was crowned the overall winner of the 32nd Holmes Invitational for the second straight season thanks to a 147.75 point output.

For the 2009 season, Kaneland girls track has a slew of returning athletes, some whom have seen State action.

Last week saw Kaneland High School dole out its winter athletic awards with four sports being recognized on various levels.

At the Hononegah Girls Indoor Classic on Saturday, Kaneland Lady Knights track finished 21st out of 22 teams (6.5 points). Homewood-Flossmoor, with 82 points, led the charge, followed by Whitney Young at 73 points and West Aurora at 71.5.

At least one athlete associated with the University of Northern Iowa had a good month.

In 2008, Lindsay Gierke finished fourth in the 300 hurdles, sixth in the 100 meter dash and seventh in the 200 meters at the Class 2A State meet. She holds a personal-best of 11.99 in the 100 meters along with a time of 24.60 in the 200 meters.
