Thomas L. Maurer, of Elburn, convicted in 2004 of soliciting sex from a teenage girl, may be retried in Kane County Circuit Court, the 2nd District Illinois Appellate Court ruled March 12.

Michael A. Alvarez pleaded guilty March 17 to running an illegal gambling operation at the former Emma’s Pub & Cantina in downtown Elburn and at Miguel’s on the Fox in St. Charles.

The village of Virgil has three vacancies on its board of trustees, with four candidates running—two incumbents and two new contenders. Since 2005, when B&B Developers proposed a large development in the Virgil area, the village has been looking at how it wants to grow.

The Sugar Grove Public Library District will ask voters to increase funding for the operating expenses of the new building scheduled to open in August 2009. The 27,430-square-foot building, currently under construction, is located on a five-acre site at Municipal Drive and Snow Street.

When a Sugar Grove Township Community House Board member decided to retire, the opening encouraged two Sugar Grove residents to get involved.

Kaneland girls soccer got the season off to a winning start with a rain-swept 4-0 win at Illinois Math & Science Academy in Aurora on Tuesday.

For the 2009 season, Kaneland girls track has a slew of returning athletes, some whom have seen State action.

Children’s book illustrator Wendell Minor told Kaneland John Shields Elementary School students that he knew he wanted to become an artist by the time he was in fourth grade. Although his art teacher encouraged him, his other teachers and fellow students did not take his desire seriously, he said.

Kaneland’s indoor girls track season continued on the homestretch with its Western Sun Conference Indoor track meet at Glenbard South on Friday, with the Lady Knights.

The Kaneland High School auditorium now has in its lobby a permanent memorial of a well-loved and talented theatre student who was killed in an automobile accident. Marcus Issel, a 2006 graduate of Kaneland, is being remembered with the donation of benches.

Lady Knights softball suffered a 3-2 late-inning loss to visiting Milledgeville-Polo co-op on Monday.

A habitat restoration work day will be held on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, located on Bliss Road in Sugar Grove. Please meet in the main parking lot.
