Village officials on Monday agreed to adopt the updated Kane County Stormwater Ordinance to comply with new National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) standards. The village must adopt the revised standards or risk losing its flood insurance and eligibility for certain types of disaster relief.
The revised ordinance includes additional and more specific building protection standards for garage or storage areas located in a floodplain, including a system to automatically equalize flood forces on exterior walls. The new regulations also specify that manufactured homes must be elevated on piers at least 36 inches tall.
All new construction and improvements to existing residential structures in a floodplain must be anchored to prevent them from floating, collapsing or moving in any way. Flood-resistant materials and construction methods to minimize flood damage must also be utilized.
A requirement to notify all communities next to the alteration or relocation of a watercourse such as a river or stream has also been added.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), together with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is currently updating Flood Insurance Rate Maps in Kane County as part of a nationwide initiative.
