Guyton, Yonkovich see season end at Sectionals

KANELAND—Playoff golf arrived with a vengeance, and had a KHS girls golfer with the last name of Guyton taking on all comers.

It was anything but deja vu, as freshman Tori Guyton, younger sister of current-ISU Redbird Hayley, advanced out of the IHSA Class AA Girls Golf Burlington Central Regional, hosted at Sycamore Golf Club on Oct. 5.

Competing as an individual, Guyton, who competed for Kaneland in the JV ranks this season, shot a 102, earning the last individual qualifying spot for Tuesday’s Buffalo Grove Sectional.

Guyton’s season came to an end shooting that same score at famed Cog Hill in Lemont on Tuesday for the St. Ignatius Sectional.

Geneva’s Megan Rush outshot Guyton by one stroke at the regional. The top individual qualifier was Sycamore’s Carly Hudon at 78.

Wheaton-Warrenville South took the regional crown with a score of 340.

Meanwhile, boys golf saw its season officially come to an end on Monday at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, as sophomore Matt Yonkovich was unable to advance to State as an individual qualifier. The highest qualifying score for an indivudla was 76. Sterling, Marmion Academy and Vernon Hills advanced as a team.

A year ago, KHS played as a team at the Freeport Sectional and finished 11th out of 12.

The 2011 boys golf outfit says goodbye to captains Adam Grams, Troy Krueger and Anthony Sperando, along with fellow seniors Zach Douglas and Mitch Gemini.

KANELAND—With their sixth dual win in a row, Kaneland High School golf is making opponents feel as if they’ve been clubbed.

With a convincing 172-199 win over the visiting Hinckley-Big Rock Royals squad out at Hughes Creek in Elburn on Sept. 7, and a 154-157 loss to Sycamore on Tuesday, the Knights see their mark go to 6-2.

KHS has now won 15 of its last 19 regular season dual matchups, dating back to the beginning of 2010.

Exceptional scores were shot by medalists Sean Glennon and Connor Williams with 42 each.

Zach Douglas shot a 43, followed by Mitch Gemini’s 45.

In the JV skirmish, the Knights took a 197-226 meeting with H-BR. Jacob Sheehan shot a 46.

On Saturday, the golfers traveled to Batavia for the Bulldogs’ invite, and finished 16th out of 30 teams, with a total of 322, one better than Joliet Catholic. Lyons Township took the meet with a 302. Matt Yonkovich shot a 78, while Williams shot an 80.

Against the Spartans were led by Yonkovich’s 38.

Ensuing action sees Kaneland at Morris on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Golfers edge Spartans, fall to Marengo Indians

For now, everything’s coming up snake-eyes for the Kaneland High School golfers.

The Knights are 1-1-1 in dual competition, but came away with a tight win against rival Sycamore on Tuesday at Hughes Creek. That followed a 167-174 loss to Marengo on Thursday.

The win over Sycamore went Kaneland’s way after both teams were tied at 166. But the top four scores for Kaneland out-performed Sycamore’s top four entries.

Heroes for KHS included Hayden Senese (41), Troy Krueger (41), Tyler Hochsprung (42) and Hayley Guyton (42).

Sycamore’s Alex Schultz golfed a 37.

The JV Knights lost to the Spartans by a 175-188 mark. Top scores for Kaneland included Mitch Gemini’s 45 and Luke Kreiter’s 46.

Against Marengo, Guyton shot a 40 to get medalist honors, while Krueger and Josh Schuberg shot 43 each. Zach Douglas managed a 48. Marengo’s Jake Tucker keyed the Indians’ win.

The JV crew took care of business against the Indians with a 190-198 win. Knight Rhys Childs rose to the occasion with a 45 score, followed by Gemini’s 46, Ryan Goodenough’s 49 and Kreiter’s 50.
